The Video Lookbook Craze!

It seems that everyone is jumping on the Video Lookbook bandwagon. These short videos showcasing a designer's latest collection have become quite popular over the last few years. Now even the House of Deréon has jumped on board. The models look absolutely amazing and I like these designs more so than previous collections. Check out the House of Deréon's Spring/Summer lookbook and some of my favorite lookbook videos below.

It's another beautiful Friday! Today I'm grooving to Nigerian singer-songwriter, Asa (pronounced Asha). Her current album Beautiful Imperfection is described as funked up soul-pop with a voice that mixes Macy Gray huskiness with Nina Simone passion. The album is really uplifting and fun, mixing 60's soul, pop, reggae and rock. Check out the music video for 'Be My Man' below. Enjoy!

Duro Olowu: Fashion Meets Art

Fashion Designer, Duro Olowu, has set up shop at the Lower East Side gallery, Salon 94 Freemans with "Material" a pop-up exhibition for his 2012 spring collection. A favorite of First Lady Michelle Obama, this designer is taking the idea of fashion as art to the masses. The pop-up shop and group show is as he calls it an assemblage of eye-catching objects that have inspired him along the way. The show features his own designs plus vintage photographs by Hamidou Maiga, woven canvases by Tony Cox and ceramics by Mat Merkel Hess. Artist Glenn Ligon also hand-painted a limited-edition set of his book Glenn Ligon: Some Changes especially for the exhibit. If you're in the area be sure to check out the show, it runs from February 9th through March 4th.

Behind every great man is...
Of course I have to mention Duro Olowu's extraordinary wife, Thelma Golden, Director & Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem. What a power couple!

Jason Wu for Target has arrived!

The Jason Wu collection for Target hit the racks yesterday morning. What did you snag? Were you overjoyed or underwhelmed? Did you battle the lines or shop online? I must say I was overall pleased and snagged a few pieces for myself. Some of the dresses were a bit too shear and ultra delicate but what can you expect for $39.99? It seems that Target has done it again! I wonder what fantastic Designer is next on the list.

#NOWPLAYING: Esperanza Spalding

HAPPY FRIDAY everyone! I generally like to start my Friday's off with new tunes and lucky me, a good friend shared this video with me last night. Esperanza Spalding is back with “Black Gold”, the vivacious first single from her upcoming album, Radio Music Society. I absolutely love the song and its empowering message. The music video is fun and vibrant and takes me back to my time in New York City when outdoor concerts, block parties and street fairs were a common thing. I so miss that! And who can deny these lady's fashion sense. They are fierce! The earrings, colorful fabrics, red wedge booties...just fabulous! Enjoy and have a great weekend!

Peace, Love and Soul!

I can remember my Saturday morning excitement as that psychedelic train moved and grooved across the TV screen while the words Sooouuul Trainnnn filled our living room. The epitome of cool, Don Cornelius brought the song-and-dance TV show, Soul Train to homes all over America. It was a cultural revolution that made Black America proud. It celebrated our style, our dancing and showcased our talent. Soul Train featured such legends as James Brown, Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye and Gladys Knight and launched the careers of many including Jody Watley, Rosie Perez and Fred "Rerun" Berry. From the Soul Train dancers to the Scramble Board, to the Soul Train Line and Don Cornelius' mesmerizing voice, it was sixty minutes of pure fun. Soul Train taught the world to dance while creating a platform to help break down racial and cultural barriers. Thank you Don Cornelius for your vision.

RIP Don Cornelius (1936-2012) "We wish you Peace, Love and Soul!"
