Embellished Walls via Lacquer & Linen

I love this post by Sarah of Lacquer & Linen on her favorite trend of 2013, Embellished Walls. Wallcoverings can be pricey, so DIYs are a great way to dress up your walls inexpensively. All it takes is a little creativity and you can give your walls a complete makeover. The vintage shutters are ingenious! It's like your very own cozy B&B. I don't think I ever would have thought of that.

DIY: Make your old bed new again!

I'm sure a lot of you out there, including myself, fell victim to the over-sized, wood bed craze a few years back. Don't raise your hands all at once. I'm know I'm not the only one! =) Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with this type of bed in the right interior. Case in point, Interior Designer Mariette Himes Gomez creates the most dreamy sleigh beds and bedrooms. If I had a large home with ample space, this bed would fit perfectly.

As I have matured in my own design aesthetic, the style of my current bed no longer reflects my personality. It's a great bed; solid wood, very heavy and will stand the test of time. It just doesn't fit in with my decor anymore. So instead of doing away with a well made bed, I decided to freshen it up myself. You'd be surprised how much a little paint can breathe new life into furniture.

The first step was to measure the upholstery section of the existing headboard. I then took the measurements to my dear friend Maria of Jazzy Custom Designs. She created a custom upholstered headboard using the fabric and buttons I'd chosen. Isn't it fabulous?!!

*This is when I started to really get excited.*

[If you'd like to try this step yourself, there's a great tutorial on Jenna Sue's blog.]

*This is where I started to panic!*

I had all of the supplies ready, I'd removed all of the screws, the drop cloth was in place. I began to tug at the faux leather panels and to my dismay they were glued on with the strongest adhesive known to man! Luckily Maria was there to calm me down and we proceeded to tug, pull and chisel until the panels were finally free. This two hour project instantly turned into an all day project.

If you run into an unexpected problem like this, don't stress. Take your time, research to find a solution and ask for help.
Once the panels were removed, I used sandpaper to even the surface. I applied two coats of primer and then two coats of paint. There was no need to paint the center portion because the new upholstery panel would cover it. Finally I attached the new headboard.

It was definitely all worth it and I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was a full day of sweat and tears but it didn't come close to the cost of a new bed. I spent roughly $350 on the materials. I am in love with my 'new' bed and I's so much more comfortable!

A date with my Nikon

I've really been focusing on my photography lately. One, I want to provide you guys with stellar photography on the blog. Two, well I really enjoy having an excuse to decorate. =)

I took these photos this past weekend and they're making me so happy. I styled this little outdoor vignette with a mix of vintage and modern furnishings. Furniture doesn't have to be the same materials or a part of a set. Using the same shapes, colors and textures will help to blend different furniture styles. Don't you think it makes a space way more interesting?

I also like the idea of using indoor furniture outdoors. Outdoor furniture can sometimes be limiting. If you find the perfect wooden dining table, there's no reason not to use it outdoors. Just be sure to waterproof your furniture to protect it from the elements.

If you're also working on improving your photography skills, Tiffany over at Savor Home posted some great tips this week! Her photography is beyond beautiful and will totally inspire you to be patient and keep practicing. It takes time and practice makes perfect!

What's Your Style: HOLLYWOOD GLAM

If this photo of model/fashion editor, Julia Sarr-Jamoiswere an interior it would have Hollywood Glam written all over it. Hollywood Glam or Hollywood Regency as it's also called, has made a modern comeback. This design style is not for the faint of heart. The over-the-top decor models the glitz and glamour of the 1930s. It's definitely for the person that loves to make a bold statement and is not afraid of gold, lacquer and chandeliers.

I LOVE a good Blanket

Don't you like cuddling up with a warm blanket while watching a good movie? Me too!! I actually keep 3-4 blankets in my living room for guests to use as well. I think it's a nice touch. It makes your space feel cozy. My favorite is a throw from the Andrew Morgan Collection pictured below. I've had it since my days of living in New York City and that was many, many moons ago now. Definitely invest in a quality blanket in order for it to last.

Refinery29 has chosen their 13 favorite comfy, cozy blankets. Go here to view their picks. We still have a few Winter months ahead of us, so it's not too late to purchase one.

I Dream of Office Space: Part #2

Last Fall I was dreaming of creating an office space that would fuel my creativity. I've finally completed it! Check out my original post where I shared some photo inspiration found on Pinterest. I knew I wanted it minimal with framed typography and images that would keep me inspired. I think it came out great and I'm loving the pops of yellow! I'm such a coffee shop girl but now I actually enjoy working from home. My space is bright, visual and fun. If you work at home often, I think it's so important to create a space that you actually want to work in. You have to be comfortable in order to be productive so take the time to really create a space that you enjoy.

It was a rainy weekend here in Dallas so it was the perfect time to stay in and have a photo shoot. Thanks to my dear friend Gina @ banafrit décor for the laughs and for taking these fantastic photos! We had a blast!

**UPDATE: Thanks to Cynthia for this lovely post on Addicted2Etsy!**

Friday Inspiration: Abigail Ahern

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has a fun yet relaxing weekend. Any exciting plans? This weekend will be very busy for me. I have an interior photo shoot, a birthday party and tons of little errands. My hope is to still find time to rest. Remember it's just the beginning of January, we have to pace ourselves. =)

Here's a look at Interior Designer Abigail Ahern for a little Friday inspiration. I love Abigail's eclectic take on interiors. The most interesting interiors are the ones that blend styles, mixing vintage with modern and traditional with edginess. There's just so much eye candy in her home to take in. Simply lovely. Enjoy!

The Emerald City

The blogoshphere is still on fire with Emerald, the Pantone 2013 Color of the Year. I must say that I am especially happy that my birthstone color has made a comeback. I don't think it has received the respect it deserves over the years. Emerald makes me think of glamour and old Hollywood.
It's sophisticated and lush.

I think of designers like Kelly Wearstler and Miles Redd using the color. It's a bold commitment but will add a luxurious touch to an interior. Emerald definitely takes a bit of courage when decorating. This is not a color for the faint of heart.

I found these great examples on Pinterest of how to use emerald the right way. You can also check out my Pinterest board for more ideas. Enjoy!

Thinking Outside the Box: Doors

Doors can sometimes be an afterthought. Just as a pocket square is the finishing touch to a well tailored suit, doors are a detail that shouldn't be forgotten. A door can be used as an architectural detail to enhance a room or even as a punch of color to spice a room up. Why settle for the typical interior white door?
Here are some cool ideas to transform your doors into works of art. The possibilities are endless!

Duro Olowu for JCPenney

Fashion Designer, Duro Olowu is no stranger to this blog. I am a fan. The lookbook for the "designer collaboration" with JCPenny has arrived. Inspired by the designer's Spring '13 Collection, it's full of color, bold fabrics and African-inspired patterns. To my delight, the collection also includes a home goods line! Yes!!

I must admit, I would totally stand in line for this one. More details over at Refinery29.

Magazine Crush

I'm so embarrassed. Why am I just discovering the awesomeness that is Livingetc Magazine? For me, things haven't been quite the same since Domino Magazine left. Now Livingetc has filled that void! Unfortunately it's pretty expensive to have a subscription in the US but you can find it at your local bookstore. The images, home tours, designer profiles and product features are pure joy. This is currently my go-to magazine for inspiration. If you haven't checked it out, but I'm probably sure you have. Let me know what you think. Happy Friday!

2012: We Bid You Adieu

It's a NEW YEAR! 2013 is upon us and it's once again time to begin anew. Exhale. I am very excited about this year!! I must say that I accomplished a lot in 2012. I started a business, launched my blog, fell in love with Dallas, had a GREAT vacation and started planning for an upholstery fabric line. I'm expecting even more accomplishments for this year. It's time to put our plans into place, explore those ideas we've had on the back burner and take a leap of faith towards our dreams. =) Let's get to moving!

1. My home. For the first time in my life, I went girly. I upgraded my decor with bling, faux fur, gold, silver and tons of sparkle. I'm in love! I naturally gravitate to earth tones and neutral palettes but this year something changed. I felt happy and sparkly and I wanted my decor to reflect that.
A little change is always good!

2. Summer was a blast! Movies in the park, dining with friends and a fantastic trip to my favorite southern city, Savannah, GA! Currently this is the only US city where I've been able to totally relax. You must visit! Check out my vacation pics here

3. Business n' Bites Brunch: I gathered my entrepreneur lady friends for a brunch with a purpose. We exchanged ideas, talked product development and set goals for the future. If you're a business owner, I highly suggest having a similar event. It gave each of us the motivation we needed to stay on track.
More brunch details here

4. One of my goals for this past year was to explore a different area of Dallas each weekend. I actually pulled it off! We sometimes get so wrapped up with work and our daily routines that we don't explore the cities we live in. I treated my weekends like a tourist and discovered some treasures.
Here are a few of my new found favorites:
Home Store - {neighborhood}
Coffee Shop - Ascension Coffee
Restaurant - Sissy's Southern Kitchen & Bar
Beer Bar - Craft and Growler
Afterwork Hangout: The Cedars Social
Favorite Neighborhood - Vanguard Way

5. There were tons of great events this year. My favorite had to be Girls' Night Out where a few of my friends were vendors. It was tons of fun and I'm looking forward to the next one.
Check out the fun we had here.

Well 2012 it's been great but now it's all about 2013! There will be new additions to the blog and an upcoming online shop. Stay tuned!

Thanks for hanging with me throughout the year and I hope you continue to visit.
Many blessings and again, Happy New Year!
